HEAnet was initially formed in 1983 as collaborative endeavour between member institutions and later expanded to include EduCampus as a subsidiary.

Over the decades, we have evolved into a cornerstone of ICT services for Ireland’s education and research sector, linking learners and researchers not only across Ireland but also with peer networks in Europe and  globally.

  • 1983

    Asiera formed as a collaborative endeavour between member institutions and began operation under the name HEAnet.

  • 1993 - 1997

    Managed by UCD Computing Services under contract to HEAnet.

  • 1997

    HEAnet becomes a founding member of INEX – The Internet Neutral Exchange with connections at 512 Kbps.

    HEAnet was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. John Boland was appointed as the first HEAnet CEO.

  • 1998

    Connectivity up to 2 Mbps and our first wireless connection delivered to DIAS (Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies).

  • 2001

    Established TransAtlantic connectivity to USA and beyond.

    First HEAnet Conference.

  • 2004

    Connectivity up to 1 Gbps.

  • 2005

    First Schools connected under the Department of Education’s Schools Broadband Programme – targeting 1/2Mb to 2Mb.

  • 2008

    Phased migration of IoTs from ITnet to the HEAnet network.

  • 2010

    Edugate, our national federated access solution which today supports 40 million authentications annually was launched.

    HEAnet managed the delivery of 100Mb/s connections to every post-primary school on behalf of the Irish government between 2012 and 2014.

  • 2015

    EduCampus established as a subsidiary of HEAnet to support the Institute of Technology Client Community. EduCampus CEO Paddy Naughton appointed.

    EduCampus launch MIS Refresh programme of work to transition all clients from OnPrem to Cloud hosted services.

  • 2017

    John Boland, HEAnet CEO, retired.

    Kerrie Power appointed as CEO of HEAnet.

    HEAnet and EduCampus continue to expand their operations. EduCampus onboard new clients (UL, HOO and Trinity College Dublin)

  • 2020

    HEAnet procured 16,700 laptops for students and launched the eduroam Everywhere project in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

    EduCampus launches Strategy 2020-2024 and sets out the company’s ambition to realise its vision of empowering higher education through quality IT Shared Services.

    HEAnet and EduCampus were recognised as Best in Health & Wellbeing by InBusiness Recognition Awards 2021 run by Chambers Ireland.

    EduCampus support Atlantic Technology University Donegal as the first Higher Education Institution in Ireland to go live on the new state-of-the-art, Banner 9 cloud-based Student Record Management System.
